Total Wines has weekly tastings, and this week was extra special. Michael Speakman, owner of Westerly Wines, was pouring his Santa Rita Hills 2014 Pinot Noir, Happy Canyon 2012 and 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon. He was a true down to earth So-Cal guy, open to any questions I had.
I first tried the 2014 Pinot Noir and asked him which vineyards it was from and the alcohol percentage. He replied, “take a guess”. I had a couple of sips, and I chose a safe number of 14%, thinking that number was probably too high. He answered with, “14.9”, and I couldn’t believe it, it was big but very well balanced. He even mentioned it was a Pinot for Cab lovers, and I agreed. It had flavors of dried cherries, raspberry and oak and was still very fresh for already being 6 years old. A great price at $39.99 for a wine of this quality.
I next tried the 2012 Santa Rita Hills Happy Canyon Cabernet Sauvignon, which was
drinking much younger than the bottle stated. It was full bodied with flavors of plum, blackberry, and herbs, with just enough fun tannins to want another sip. I definitely had more than a pour or two of this beauty, and it is a real steal for a library Cab at only $39.99.
Keep an eye on Westerly Wines upcoming releases, as he has some new winemakers that are innovative and have clout in the Santa Barbara wine scene. They're definitely something to look forward to. Pick some up at Total Wines today, cause the're going quick. The 2015 was already sold out before I arrived. As always, Cheers. westerlywines.com
